The pinging from her phone woke Kailee the next morning.

The sound was instant relief. Not only did it mean her searches had pulled up some information that might be helpful in finding her cousin, but it also meant she didn’t wake up naturally.

Because naturally could have easily meant snuggled up against Kingsley, little spoon to his big one, her ass pressing up against his morning wood. The thought of that alone had made her want to sneak out of the bed and onto the couch the night before, but she’d been so exhausted she’d fallen asleep before she’d had a chance to do so.

“What’s that?” Kingsley asked as she slid out of her bed.

“DILDOS alert. It’s penetrated the towers and pulled out some info. Looks like we might have a location.”

She quickly washed her face and dressed in the bathroom while Kingsley went to one of the trunks that had been delivered the night before. FUC had stored all of his things, as no next of kin had claimed them.

“I guess no body meant someone thought I might still be alive to claim this stuff someday, huh?” he joked, speaking loudly so she could hear him behind the bathroom door.

Her stomach dropped. She hadn't had that much faith. She’d instantly thought he was dead. Though she’d known a search party went after him, having him there, alive and well, made her feel that she’d given up too soon. She should have tried harder to find him over the last year.

But dwelling on it wasn’t productive, and besides, he wanted her to let go of the guilt and let them move forward from here. And just like she’d worked hard to become a respectable agent for him, she’d endeavor to adjust her attitude and thinking for him now.

When she returned from the bathroom, he’d dressed in what Kailee thought to be a hot lumberjack look—red flannel button-down, grey jeans, and black heavy-duty work boots. He looked more comfortable in those clothes than the ones he’d worn from FUC the day before.

The feeling that she was looking at a ghost hit her in a way that it hadn’t the day before. Her mind had had enough time to process things, so the shock of the day before had lessened, and now she was truly wrapping her mind around things.

“Do I look like me again?”

“Yes,” she said, clearing her throat and trying to act normal. “You ready? We can grab some breakfast to go from the cafeteria.”

“Sustenance first, good thinking,” he replied as he strapped his gun on and tucked his new phone and ID into his pocket.

“Well, our brains don’t function at top performance if we’re not properly fueled.”

Before they left the room, he gently took her arm and turned her to face him. “We okay?”

“You told me to be, so, yes, I’m fine. My head’s focused on the mission of finding my cousin, and I fully accept your promise that everything is okay between us.”

“Good.”

They took their breakfast to the computer lab, where Doris Shrout had taken over for the spider boys.
